Anime North 2008

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Anime North was even bigger this year than last if you can believe it. There were people from all over there and because I wore a Trent U t-shirt I met a few fellow Trent students there as well. I was also able to run into a few of the artists I’d seen on deviantArt in person.

I only went one day this year but that doesn’t mean I have fewer photos to share with you; in fact I have more. This can probably be attributed to the fact that I’ve moved into the world of digital SLR cameras with the Nikon D60. A “pro-sumer” camera, the Nikon D60 combines many of the features which make the D80 great with a light and easy to use package which I’m quite enjoying so far. Of course, the price is right too.

Thank you, Trent & NIN

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

So it finally arrived. I could not be having a better day.

I’ve just finished a promising project mock up at work which the client is already excited about, and so are we. After talking with a very helpful fellow at Canada Post in town and running all over town I was able to pick up my copy of Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3. Perhaps I’ll have something to say about that later, the best is yet to come.

I ran all over town to get my new video game but my baby, my pride and joy is an album called Ghosts I-IV. I was not even expecting that package to arrive for a few weeks considering NIN.com et al are doing this sans record label as far as I know.

Why did I pay $5 extra to get a copy of NIN Ghosts I-IV? Simply put, I love it. I’ve been in love since the moment NIN.com offered up Ghosts I for free and I downloaded it. I needed to own it. I needed my own physical copy.

Do I want the pretty pictures included? Yes, yes I do. Do I want a shiny new CD? No, not really. It doesn’t mean much to me what condition the disc is in as long as it plays. I simply wanted to own a copy which I could thrash the living hell out of. Its open now.

The first track reminds me of “A warm place” from the downward spiral. From that moment on it becomes progressively harsher with different moods for each piece - all set to scenery included with the disc. It really is an interesting project and I highly recommend you check it out. :D

Edward Lorenz dead at 90

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Who is Edward Lorenz? Well he’s known in scientific circles as the father of chaos theory. Chaos theory explores the relatioships between tiny changes in a dynamic system and the vast impacts these changes can have.

For me this is a somber day as I fondly remember reading about chaos theory in my school library - discovering this theory for the first time.

Edward Lorenz was apparently a humble, kind man who stayed active up until he died of cancer. Ninety years is nothing to sneeze at, either. Living for that long is probably due in part to his lifestyle. I hope I get to live that long in good health, even if that thought is far off for now.

In 1972 he wrote the study, “Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?” His work had impact in all areas of science. It was this theory and it’s implications which drew connections between the various disciplines and shed light on the interactions between these complex systems.

It’s Friday the 13th again!

Friday the 13th video game for the NES

I love it when Friday the 13th rolls around.

Superstitions about it being an unlucky day don’t usually hold for me. Let’s hope that happens today as well. I feel a lot better than I have been.

It will be Friday the 13th again in July of 2007.

The last time it was Friday the 13th was October 2006.

I’d be interested to see whether Friday the 13th is usually a lucky or unlucky day for anyone who bothers reading this. Please click on the ‘comments’ link below and leave a comment.

I suppose this poll will be highly effected by perception but that’s still useful info. Please comment!

April snowstorms bring May… ?

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Okay, I’m going to use this blog for a place to rant now.

It’s not so much a rant anymore as it’s kind-of funny, but this morning this is the view I saw outside.

April snowstorms bring May… ?

I usually love snowy weather and I didn’t think much of a little snow in April. The problem came when I was about a block away, and I noticed I didn’t have my glasses on. That’s fine, I don’t even need my glasses to drive legally. The world will be slightly fuzzier for today.

The worst came when a schoolbus was driving up the street practically on the sidewalk. Of course it ran straight through the untrodden slush and created a huge wave. I wasn’t on the sidewalk… no, no no! I was in a parking lot about 3 meters away and I still was soaked!

Wow… I’m actually in good spirits really but wish me luck. This looks like it’s going to be an interesting day.

Hah… They actually posted my photo too.
